A newspaper has no more rights than ordinary citizens!

Grrrrrr…..

In reporting on matters of public interest, news medium – including newspapers – have no more rights than ordinary citizens with regard to protection from retribution by the subjects they write about. Publication of proceedings in a court of law, in parliament and a judicial commission of enquiry are privileged in that the publisher of proceedings in those forums cannot be taken to task for reporting – accurately – exactly what is said in those forums. The accent is on accurate. In addition to common law, media subscribe to a more stringent code of conduct, the Press Code, which basically requires truth, balance and fairness. Need I say more or do you get the message?

Bravo 2 oor en uit!
